Description
"A Leap Out of the Dark is probably the first novel in English written by a Senegalese writer. In theme and style, it is closer to the Anglophone novel of postcolonial disillusionment than to the standard Senegalese novel in French. Written against the political background of the anonymous African State of Kensega, which could also stand for the author's own country in many respects, the novel tells the story of a man, Moodu Njie, and his struggle for true African democracy through the re-education of the masses in and through their own national language, Wolof. The author also raises other topical issues, such as the ambiguous relationships between Africa and her Diaspora on the one hand, and between Africa and the Western world on the other hand. No doubt a writer with an obvious and assumed Pan-Africanist agenda, Dieng clearly means his novel to be a political one, and concerns himself more with a hearing from his readers than with praises from reviewers." - from Amzon
